For brands
How much does it cost to license a product design?
3 October 2026
If your brand needs a lamp, a bottle or a fragrance line for the next launch calendar, the design itself has a price — and it is rarely written anywhere. This page sets out what the usual routes cost, and what it costs to license a finished design through Boniface instead.
The usual routes, and their price tags
Commissioning from scratch is the most expensive way to get a design. An independent perfumer typically starts a fragrance brief at 2,000 to 3,000 €, and a packaging agency or design studio bills similarly before anyone sees a finished form. Buying a generic mould or a stock bottle avoids that bill but puts your launch on the same shelf as everyone else who bought it. And the printable files sold for 2 to 10 € on Etsy are hobby-grade outputs, not production-ready industrial designs.
What an option costs at Boniface
Boniface sells a 3-month exclusivity option on a finished design for a fixed 1,900 €, one time. You pay through checkout, you receive the 3D files to prototype the same day, and nobody else can take the design for those three months. If the prototype convinces you and you sign the standard licence contract, the 1,900 € are deducted from the 5,000 € licence advance, and royalties run at 5% of the wholesale price. The full terms are stated once, on the design page, and there is nothing to negotiate.
So the honest comparison for a first product: an option costs less than the starting price of a fragrance brief, and you hold a finished, prototypable design within the day rather than after a development cycle. Where a brief wins is when your product needs to start from your own constraints — a specific mechanism, an existing range, a brand system a finished design cannot know. For that, commission.
What to check before you pay either way
Whichever route you take, the questions are the same: who owns the design today, whether the files are production-ready, and what happens to your exclusivity if you decide not to proceed. At Boniface the answers are fixed: the designs come from one in-house-trained designer, the files arrive with the option, and an option that lapses simply returns the design to the collection — the fee is not refunded, and it says so before payment, not after.
The collection opens with the first designs soon; the catalogue page shows the terms in full and lets you leave a work email to see them first.
